Happy October, die-hard animation folks! This week – some stories on the perils and rewards of attempting to license or borrow classic animation films!
As a special treat this week, here is the first restoration we’ve made public: the *almost* finished clean up of A Chinaman’s Chance (1932), with the Celebrity Pictures titles.
There’s no cartoon this week; instead, a sort-of ‘part 1’ update on various projects, all of them
“On the Thunderbean Front”.
One of the animated sequences in a live action film I really like is the ‘Walrus and the Carpenter’ scene from the bizarre 1933 Paramount Alice in Wonderland.
This particular short is one of the most ambitious of the Famous Studios cartoons in layout and overall design.
The forthcoming Rainbow Parade set is full of challenges. Over the weekend I spent a lot of time cleaning up ‘Parrotville Post Office’ from the only known 35mm print.
I feel like this cartoon is easy to define as “Budget Fleischer”, and there are elements that are very similar to Fleischer shorts like Swing You Sinners.
I’m happy to *finally* announce that the new Blu-rays, Mid Century Modern, Volume 1 and 2, have arrived— so it seemed like a good day to talk about them a little.
This is one of my favorite ‘oddball’ educational shorts. It appears to have been originally produced as a silent short then revamped with new footage in the early 30s.
