Go Nagai’s The Abashiri Family was animated by Studio Pierrot as an OAV in 1991. More specifically, it was a series of four 20-minute OAVs, that were too violent and too much for children’s TV.
Mack Sennett envisioned a gag seen through binoculars for a 1928 feature film. The resulting effort became a legend of a story that saw Walter Lantz getting his first big break as an animator in Hollywood.
You can’t make this stuff up. In 1987, Filmation was actively promoting a new animated series called “Bravo!” about a group of round and furry characters called The Fuzzy Folks.

Jerry Beck is a writer, animation producer, college professor and author of more than 15 books on animation history. He is a former studio exec with Nickelodeon Movies and Disney, and has written for The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. He has curated cartoons for DVD and Blu-ray compilations and has lent his expertise to dozens of bonus documentaries and audio commentaries on such.
