Here’s a sort-of summary of the events of the week: Fleischer Rareties; Flip The Frog; and some beloved Van Bueren cartoons – now restored!
Paul Whiteman was such a well-known personality that cartoons – topical creatures that they were – would waste no opportunity to have a little fun with him.
I asked Thad Kommorowski if it would be ok to share a transfer I did a year back from one of his rare 16mm prints – Tale of Two Mice (1945) with it’s original titles.

As we were searching through the Flip the Frog materials, Dave Gerstein was kind enough to make a title card sheet showing the original title cards we have seen up to this point.
Wolfe’s animation on these low budget films is a lot of fun – and it’s also fun to see him using the bouncing ball device, having animated on the Fleischer bouncing ball films in the early 30s.
Lye’s Peanut Vendor short is unintentionally the stuff of nightmares, featuring a creepy Monkey made of pipe cleaners.
After working with 1920s and 30s materials for many weeks, sometimes it’s nice to take a little diversion and look at something else, so that’s exactly what is being presented today.
