Cartoon Events This Week In LA: Technicolor Toons, Golden Books and Fleischer Tribute

TECHNICOLOR TOONS

Thursday night (5/29) at 7:30pm I’ll be introducing an all-new program of Technicolor Toons – which is fast-becoming an annual tradition – projected on the big screen at The Cinefamily (aka Silent Movie Theatre) in Hollywood. If you happen to find yourself in this neck of the woods on Saturday, we’d love to see you there. I can’t post the titles of what we are showing, cause they are donated from private collections. In fact, private collections are the only places Technicolor exists today.

For those unfamiliar with what Technicolor is and why this is a big deal, here’s a quick refresher. From 1932 till about 1972 a wonderful company named Technicolor created a unique way of photographing and printing color film, using a 3-strip method breaking the color down (Cyan, Yellow and Magenta) that allowed for vibrant permanent (and non-fading) color. The old prints that survive are a record of what these films looked like when they were originally released – and they are just plain gorgeous.

Watching them projected on a big screen in a theatre IS different than watching them on television or on You Tube. We will be showing cartoons from the Screen Gems studio, Terrytoons, Universal, Paramount, and other studios from Hollywood’s golden age. Here’s a little trailer for the show – but don’t be misled by the quality of these clips – we will be showing these cartoons, but the actual Technicolor prints will knock your socks off!

FLEISCHER STUDIO TRIBUTE

Next weekend, I’ll be introducing a tribute to the Fleischer Studio at the Old Town Music Hall in beautiful downtown El Segundo, California (that’s just south of LAX)…

This is part of a special film series presented at classic movie theatre in association with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Highlights will include several films for which Max Fleischer was nominated for Academy Awards: Popeye Meets Sinbad, Superman, Hunky & Spunky, and Educated Fish. Silent cartoons will be accompanied live on the Mighty Wurlitzer Theater Pipe Organ.

There will be four showings of this program: Friday 5/30 at 8:15PM, Saturday 5/31 at 2:30PM and 8:15PM and Sunday 6/1 2:30PM. For more information and directions, click here.

The Art Of Disney Golden Books Book Signing and Brunch

Also next weekend, the folks behind CTN Expo run the Center Stage Gallery in Burbank – and they are presenting The Art Of Disney Golden Books Book Signing and Brunch – Sunday June 1st, from 1pm to 5pm.

Co-hosted by Stuart Ng Books, there will be numerous Little Golden Book Artists in attendance including Lorelay Bove, Grace Lee, Brittney Lee, Jean-Paul Orpinas and Lori Tyminski (with additional artists to be announced) – as well as author Charles Solomon and Disney Publishing’s editor Ken Shue.

Solomon’s new book will be available for everyone to sign. The Art of the Disney Golden Books celebrates a legacy that has now thrived for more than eighty years and continues to influence new generations of artists and filmmakers.

Through interviews with contemporary animators who recall tracing the characters in their childhood Disney Golden Books, paintings by artists who influenced and inspired the Disney Golden Book illustrations, and a generous complement of Golden Book artwork-much of which was thought to have been lost until very recently-the rich tradition of the series is explored in this vibrant volume.

From Peter Pan and Cinderella to Toy Story and Tangled, the Disney Golden Books are displayed in all their glory, evoking a poignant sense of wonder and nostalgia. For as long as parents and children partake in the ritual of reading together at bedtime, the Disney Golden Books will continue to be published, enjoyed, and treasured.
